🐙OCTOPUSSY RIOT🐙 PLAYS PUNK CONCERT AT ESBJERG HARBOR IN PROTEST AGAINST NEW OIL AND GAS IN THE NORTH SEA
On March 16, the punk band Octopussy Riot, wearing octopus-like balaclavas, disrupted the fossil fuel company Total Energies with a clear message: New oil and gas extraction kills both humans and other species. The band trespassed Totals area at the harbor in Esbjerg, from where they played a protest concert with electric guitar, drums, viola and singing. Outside the fence, a crowd danced and partied alongside a giant octopus built from recycled materials.
Octopussy Riot is obviously inspired by, and a tribute to, the Russian protest band @pussyriot.
The action was part of the international campaign "The Sea knows no borders" with actions around the entire North Sea in The Netherlands, England, Sweden, Scotland, Norway and Germany, all in protest against new oil and gas in the North Sea.
We are in the middle of a climate collapse, and it should be a no-brainer to stop all new extraction of fossil fuels. 2023 was the warmest year on record with a global average temperature almost 1.5 degrees warmer than pre-industrial levels (1), and we are on track for 2 degrees or more. As the earth warms, so does the ocean. This kills wildlife and ecosystems, and more carbon emissions are released into the atmosphere.
Total Energies is the largest oil and gas producer in the Danish part of the North Sea (3). In addition, Total is one of the world's largest fossil companies. Total will reopen Denmark's largest gas field, the Tyra field, which has been under reconstruction for 4 years. Tyra II consists of 8 drilling platforms and will be able to extract 2.8 million m3 of gas per year for at least 25 years.
The campaign falls on the same day as Denmark's Earth Overshoot Day, which means that we in Denmark have already used up our share of the earth's resources for the whole of 2024 on March 16. If all people on earth had a consumption like in Denmark, it would require around 4.5 earth globes. Denmark is exactly the opposite of a "green pioneering country".
